25. International Literaturfestival Berlin
September 2025
At the beginning of the year, I unexpectedly received an invitation to participate in the Berlin Literature Festival. As an aside, I would like to mention that it is still a bit confusing for me whether the author of a graphic novel is an artist or a writer. Since my books so far have been created from stories that have writers as authors, in those cases I logically consider myself an illustrator. It gets more complicated when the creator of the graphic novel is the author of the story and also the illustrator. So. One day at the festival was dedicated to graphic novels. During the day, there were moderator-led conversations with comic book creators. By that time, "November" had been published in Germany by Voland&Quist, and immediately before the festival, "Dead Mountaineers hotel" had been published. Local readers' interest was already shown by the reviews and introductions of Mountaineers that had already appeared in various publications. The performance went well. I introduced Kratt (Estonian mythological caracter) to the locals and also talked about the place of the "Dead Mountaineers Hotel" in Estonian culture. After the performance, there was also a signing. It was pleasantly surprising that there was quite a long line of people wanting to sign. To clarify, in the case of a comic book, signing means drawing a small picture in addition to the author's signature. I spent a full hour drawing pictures in the books. I would also like to thank the Estonian Embassy in Berlin for supporting my trip and performance.
